When Nike introduced Kyrie Irving’s signature shoe – the Nike Kyrie 1 – to the world, it was more than just another guy who got a shoe with his name on it. The Nike Kyrie 1 is history in the making. Nike waited long and hard to find the next person to make the leap to the rarefied air that only the greatest of the great reside. Names like Jordan, Barkley, Penny, Kobe, LeBron, and Durant are on that short list of Nike Basketball signature athlete. For Irving to be placed on that same pedestal speaks not only to his abilities as a basketball player, but also to Nike’s faith in his potential to become a global icon.
The introduction of Irving to the “Nike family” is not unlike what they have done for other young signature athletes in the past, most recently with Kevin Durant. At the launch event of the Kyrie 1, two colorways were introduced to the world, a welcome change of pace from the seemingly non-stop flood of new colorways for the signature shoes of Irving’s big brothers at Nike. People forget but when the Nike KD 1 first launched it was a relatively low-key release. The Kyrie 1 seems to be following the same blueprint.
First up was the “Dream” colorway that sold at a brisk pace for $110, signaling a desire from the marketplace for not only the next Nike signature athlete but also a Nike signature shoe at a relatively affordable price. Up next for the Kyrie 1 is the “Deceptive Red” colorway, launching today at Champs Sports. Inspired by Irving’s aforementioned deceptive quickness that has often left defenders wondering where the reigning NBA All-Star MVP went, the red and black work nicely with his Cleveland colors. Other features of the shoe include Nike Zoom Air cushioning in the forefoot to maximize responsiveness, a unique 360-degree dynamic traction pattern to help with keeping you stable on the floor, and excellent support and breathability thanks to Nike’s tried and true Hyperfuse technology.
Is the Nike Kyrie 1 on the same level of other great Nike signature debuts like the Nike Zoom Generation, the Nike Zoom Kobe 1 or even the Nike Air Jordan 1? Only time will tell just how Irving’s run will play out, but if the success of the Kyrie 1 so far among sneakerheads is any indication of his future, it looks like Nike just won again.
